Our school has been awarded the Christian Aid Global Neighbours Bronze Award

Global Neighbours provides a framework for thinking about global citizenship education in schools.

It recognises that the curriculum design and collective worship activities at Saint James Primary School enable children to gain a global perspective and help them to become active global citizens.

What does the Global Neighbours award signify?

The award scheme aims to increase pupils’ understanding of the root causes of poverty and injustice, as well as engage and empower pupils as agents of change in the transformation of our world.

Gaining the award, identifies that our school supports the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of pupils, strengthens the ‘promotion of fundamental British values’ and promotes critical thinking across the curriculum, strengthening links with the local community.

Achieiving the Global Neighbours accreditation also identifies that the Religious Education provision at Saint James Primary School increases pupils’ knowledge and understanding about why and how Christians, along with people of other faiths and those of no faith, want to change the world to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty.

In helping pupils to become active global citizens we are encouraging them to become courageous advocates for change in the world, from a local to global level.

Examples of this over the past year have included the Year 4 Chocolate fair, to raise awareness of the inequality of pay for all parties involved in production of chocolate, members of Year 6 attending a local council meeting to campaign for improved drainage to prevent flooding and, most recently, our sponsorship of two Rwandan children; Prince and Ineza.
