We had an orangutan arrive in our classes! We read the story ‘The Queen’s Orang-utan by David Walliams’ and learnt about all the mischievous things the Orangutan got up to in the palace! We retold the story and remembered all the funny phrases. We have rewritten the story by changing the animal. Some of us choose flamingos, koalas, giraffes and cheetahs to arrive at the palace!

We practised sketching the crown in different shapes and sizes and then we chose our favourite style for our final piece.

“You want a giant MONKEY?!” Isn’t what was said by the year 2s, but rather the queen’s butler in the book we are reading. We are learning how to write in the form of a biography all about the queen’s orang-utan.

To immerse ourselves into the story, we pretended to be the orang-utan and focus on what our interests were, our favourite things and our family.

We have been exploring timbre (identifying the way sounds are made) and texture (recognising and responding to the different layers of sounds used in music) whilst also learning about significant individuals.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Our music lessons have focused on the 1969 moon landing and forming our own routine to create sounds. We are proud of the courage all children showed when performing their creation to the class.

Week 5-6

In our Geography lesson we looked at the human and physical features of a country. We sorted the different pictures into a table and then discussed why we thought it was either a human or physical feature. After this, we used Digimap’s to get a birds eye view of Buckingham Palace and explore the Palace grounds, where the boundary is and what human features we could see around the Palace.

In Music we played with the boom whackers which is a tuned percussion instrument that produces musical tones when struck on the floor or any surface. We did a rhythm warm up to find the beat and then we played nursery rhymes and tried to keep up with the beat!

In Year 2 we have regular opportunities to explore our emotions and mindset and learn about it. On dress to express day, we joined in with meaningful activities that promoted self-esteem, emotional awareness, and self-regulation. We engaged well with the book ‘The invisible string’ and how our hearts and our friends/family are always connected by ‘invisible string’.

On world book day, Year 2 enjoyed many activities and opportunities to celebrate the love of reading.

In R.E Year 2 have been exploring what a special place is and what it means to different people. We linked our knowledge of special places to the key concept of Mandir’s as a special place for Hindus.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We discussed big questions that explored if our places will always be special and if there are any special places that we all feel are special?

This developed our debate skills and our ability to justify our own answers. In small groups we presented our ideas to the class whilst focusing our public speaking skills.

Week 3-4

We then experienced smelling all the different smells on board the ship such as the lavender they would have left on the bed for the first-class passengers!

As part of our PSHE lessons this half term we had a visit from SCARF. We were very excited to see Harold the giraffe and his friends. We enjoyed learning about our different body parts and the importance of knowing what bullying means and what to do if we think ourselves or someone else might be getting bullied.

Later in the week we created a web using a ball of wool. We threw the wool to each other and we couldn’t let go of it. We use terms like ‘world wide web’ to describe how computers talk to one another. However, long before that was invented, fungi provided trees with their own ‘wood wide web’.

We designed our lifeboats to sell at the Sea City Musuem. We used paper and an origami effect to fold a boat shape. We added a flag and foil for decoration.
