Topic

At the beginning of the term we were very shocked and confused when they found a pile of metal scattered around the school.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We gathered it all together and soon discovered that it was an Iron Man.
alternative of the image - See caption below
There were some very interesting discussions about where this strange man had come from and why he wanted to visit Saint James School.

Science

In science we have been looking at magnets and forces.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We learned about the north and south end of a magnet and how they attract and repel.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We carried out an investigation around the classroom to find objects which attracted and repelled.

P.E.

To continue our magnetic theme, we looked at how our bodies could imitate magnets.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We had great fun creating and performing our dance routines to some very interesting music created by the sound of magnets.

Geography

alternative of the image - See caption below
In geography this half term we have been learning about coasts. This included what the features of a coast are and what causes low and high tide.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We then used digimaps to find out how erosion works. Each pair had laptop and searched Happisburgh coast.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Then, we drew three different lines for three different periods of time (1890s, 1950s and present day). Comparing the lines, we could see how much erosion had happened, over time.

Art

Continuing our “Iron Man” theme, we learned about the artist; Antony Gormley. We found out that he is famous for creating human figures using industrial materials, such as iron and steel.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We had individual pictures taken to practise sketching the other half of our body.
alternative of the image - See caption below
For our last piece of artwork, we created a chalk sculpture, using the different techniques we learned.
alternative of the image - See caption below
The chalk drawing needed to use square and rectangle shapes, similar to Antony Gormley’s pieces.

Science

alternative of the image - See caption below
In science we have been looking at magnets, forces and friction.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We have also been looking at investigating the effects of friction on different surfaces.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Year 3 have been testing toy cars on different surfaces to see which surface the toy car travels the furthest on.

Music

alternative of the image - See caption below
In music we have been learning about African percussion. We have been using hand percussion, using two drum sounds, changing tempo, matching pitch accurately and inventing our own music.

French

alternative of the image - See caption below
In French we have been ‘Recalling’ with generally accurate pronunciation, all numbers one to ten.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Joining in with songs and actions, and responding to numbers by showing fingers or ticking on whiteboards. We have also put our knowledge into practise and using our numbers while playing playground games such as hopscotch and What’s the time Mr Wolf.

Spring 2

As part of our Roman topic this half term, we went on a school trip to the Roman palace at Fishbourne, to find out about the largest Roman home found in Britain.
alternative of the image - See caption below
The children fully immersed themselves in the learning from this day, which included a workshop highlighting how the Romans lived.
alternative of the image - See caption below
The children then got to explore various activities, including; Roman letter writing and making mosaics.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In DT, towards the end of this half term, we looked at the function of a Roman Catapult.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We then worked individually, or in pairs, to investigate different materials, before designing our own and creating it out of pieces of wood and/or lolly sticks.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In our Listen 2 Me music lessons this term, we have been learning all about African percussion, the songs they may sing and how to use the African instruments.
alternative of the image - See caption below
To show off our skills, we performed an African Percussion concert to the parents. Children banged on the Dun Duns, played the cow bells, Djembes, Shekeres and Caixixis.

To celebrate World Book Day, we had a full day packed with activities, games and discussions expressing our love for reading!
alternative of the image - See caption below
Children brought in their favourite books from home, dressed up as book characters, read to adults and to children in year 2.
alternative of the image - See caption below
They even designed their own book covers!
alternative of the image - See caption below
To celebrate Comic Relief, we learnt all about what Comic Relief is, what this charity does and why they raise money.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We learnt that money raised can help lots of people, not only in the UK, but all over the world – focusing on areas of poverty.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Children wore red items of clothing and did many activities to express our values of Love and respect to one another.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We also did water colour painting by using different shades of red.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In learning through sport this half term, we have been developing our racket and ball control.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Some of us found it hard at first but we have shown great resilience and perseverance in mastering the skill and now we can send a ball over the net and return it.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In Science we have been investigating what plants need to grow healthy and strong.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We set up an investigation planting bean seeds and removing one key variable such as light, soil or water to find out how it effected the growth and health of a plant.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We measured our seedling at the beginning of the investigation and we made observations of what the plants looked like after 1 week and again after 2 weeks.
alternative of the image - See caption below
As part of our PSHE lessons, this half term we had a visit from SCARF. We were very excited to see Harold the giraffe and friends.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We enjoyed learning about how our brains send messages around our body.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We found it fascinating and enjoyed playing a game of passing messages around the human circle and didn’t realise how hard our brains actually have to work just to send one or 2 instructions.

Summer 1

In DT, we have been looking at different types of mazes, finding out what they are and what their purpose is. We found that they were commonly used in the Tudor times and King Henry the eighth had one made for him at Hampton Court Palace for entertainment.
alternative of the image - See caption below
This maze takes nearly 20 minutes to get to the centre and is known for its confusing twists and turns.
alternative of the image - See caption below
The children have been designing and making their own mazes, inspired by Hampton Court Palace.
alternative of the image - See caption below
History lessons this term have been all about the Tudors and the famous ship ‘The Mary Rose’ that was built in Portsmouth and used in battles against the French for 34 years from 1511.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We have investigated the different roles on board ship and looked at different theories of why it sank.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Linking to our topic of the Tudors, we learnt how to use Microsoft word in our ICT lessons and started to create some fact sheets about the Mary Rose.
alternative of the image - See caption below
This included creating a title, experimenting different fonts, sizes, and effects.
alternative of the image - See caption below
On Friday the 5th of May, we celebrated King Charles III Coronation in true St James style.
alternative of the image - See caption below
Although we had to have our picnic in our classrooms because of the typical English weather, we sung the British national anthem, learnt about what a Coronation is, took part in a competitive Royal horse race, did pin the tail on the corgi and painted the British flag with our fingers.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In PE this term, we have learnt how to be still through Yoga. We have learnt how to control our breathing and only focus on our belly movements rather than the air going into our nose or mouth.
alternative of the image - See caption below
We have practised many different movements, poses and stretches whilst listening to calming music and found that this set us up for the week in a relaxed and positive way.
alternative of the image - See caption below
In PSHE we have been looking at how we are all different and that we all have different talents.
alternative of the image - See caption below
One of the ways we shared our talents was by miming in our silent talent show.
