We studied the Victorian era in our history topic. This involved looking at artefacts and pictures from 150 years ago! We even found the original rules from the workhouse at Moorgreen hospital – we found this fascinating and even found out that the children had to move lots of rocks all day!

We made our own digestive system in our own classroom. This involved making food, mashing it up and then straining it through tights to make our own faeces. We loved this and it will certainly be a lesson we all remember.

Whilst researching the Victorians, we made presentations to teach our friends about an aspect of Victorian life. Our topics included: inventions, Queen Victoria, famous bridges, education and workhouses. It was fascinating to see how well the groups worked together and how much information was taught to the rest of the class.

On the final Thursday before half term, we had a Victorian Day. We had some amazing costumes including smart teachers, poor people, workhouse children and Victorian business owners.

During our Victorian Day, we tried different activities that would have been taught during Victorian era education. This included cotton weaving (pictured), long mental addition, times tables chanting and technical drawing.

We also had a Victorian PE lesson with Mr Adams as Victorian PE teacher – they are scary! This was very different to our modern day PE lessons. It involved a lot of getting up, jumping and repeating basic movements. Victorian children would have been bored but very fit!

The child led collective worship children presented a fantastic and confident Collective Worship about the theme of favouritism. The children provided a bible story with the theme of favouritism and as a class we discussed the negative effect of having favourites.

As part of our music unit, our journey began by understand the beat and rhythm of songs. We understood that songs becoming faster or slower due to the speed of the rhythm.

We then developed our understanding of music in the written form and how the rhythm is presented of sheet music using crochets, quavers, semi-breves and crocket rests. With this knowledge, we created our own 8 note songs using glockenspiels and the C pentatonic scale.

Sadly, our outdoor collective worship week did not go to plan due to the weather but we still had the opportunity create a web in the classroom. This represented connection through communication. Eventually, we did get the chance to go outside and look at the signs of spring that God had provided us.

For PE this half term, we were served with developing our racket and balls skills. Smoothies were on the menu in Year 4 as part of our DT, PSHE and English units. In small groups we researched, designed and made smoothie from different healthy ingredients. We had the opportunity to then improve and refine the recipe and then make our final smoothies. These smoothies have also been made into a set of instruction in English, to then be sold in a class recipe book.

We made beautiful pieces of artwork, which were inspired by our rivers topic. We have sketched and then carved our image on a polystyrene block. Then we rolled our paint and pressed down firmly. This created a printed version of our sketch – these are on display in year 4 as we were so proud of them.

As part of our overall topic of Raging Rivers, we made a river in the classroom. We used different colours of material to represent the different parts of a river. Then we moved the river in different ways and at different speeds to represent what happens at different stages of the river.

After creating a river in the classroom, we researched different rivers around the UK. We found the 5 longest rivers and located them using google maps. We also researched the River Blackwater as this is a significant river that we would be studying on our class visit.

In science, we have been studying sound. We found out how sound is created and how we hear sounds. Then we conducted a sound experiment on the playground to find out what happens to sound if we move further away from it. This led to lots of very scientific discussion about why it gets quieter and what happens to the sound wave.
